Findings from Dr. Sisay Bezabih's doctoral research on teacher educators' mediation and learner autonomy in EFL reading were published in PLOS ONE on 16 April 2026.
On 16 April 2026, PLOS ONE published "Enhancing EFL reading proficiency through mediated learning: Impacts on cognitive and metacognitive strategies" by Sisay Bezabih, Abiy Yigzaw, Birhanu Simegne, Dereje Assefa and Dawit Dibekulu.
The quasi-experimental study, carried out with 80 first-year social science students at Kotebe University of Education in Addis Ababa, found that targeted mediation by teacher educators significantly improved students' use of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies, their reading autonomy and their reading performance, with a large effect size.
